1. Cuneo

If you visit Cuneo and its province you’re in for a treat: truffles. In October and till November Alba hosts the International White Truffle Fair. Here you can see, touch, smell and buy truffles every Saturday and Sunday. Also, you’ll find many workshops, presentations and show cooking events. This globally attended event is an unforgettable way to experience traditional Piedmont cuisine.

2. Asti

In second place for October is Asti. This Italian province is home to lovely hamlets which are especially beautiful in fall. We suggest Nizza Monferrato, an important wine hub; Albugnano, considered the rooftop of Monferrato because of its breathtaking views; and last but not least, Agliano, where you can regenerate mind and body at its restorative thermal spas.

3. Agrigento

Let’s change landscape and head down to Sicily to our third place on the list: the province of Agrigento.

If it’s your first time here, visiting the Valle dei Templi is an absolute must. The largest and most famous archeological site on the island, and in the world, it dates back to Grecian times. In October the Valle dei Templi is full of fall colors: take a stroll amidst the ten temples dedicated to the gods of Magna Grecia and take a plunge into history amidst its shrines, necropolises and fortresses.

4. Vercelli

You certainly can’t miss the rice fields here. Monks introduced the practice of cultivating rice centuries ago, and today the fields extend from Monferrato to the plains of Vercelli, creating a geometric landscape that is quite picturesque.

Visit the surroundings of Vercelli by car, stopping to see the town of Trino, a famous archeological site, and Rovasenda, with its imposing castle from the 11th century.

5. Milan

Obviously, October is the right time to stop by Milan and discover this fashion capital. A picture under the Duomo and a glimpse of da Vinci’s Last Supper are a must!

If your destination for the month of October is the province of Gorizia then you’ve come to the right place. 

To enjoy the crisp October air head to Lake Doberdò - one of Europe’s few karst lakes - where you can admire the many colors of the season. A curious bit of info: water reaches the lake from underground rivers and flows back out through underground chambers called ponors. 

Nature lovers will also enjoy exploring the Riserva Naturale della Foce dell'Isonzo. Here you can engage in a variety of outdoor activities including bike rides, hiking, bird watching and nature photography.

In addition to visiting picturesque sites like Giardini Naxos (Naxos Gardens) and Taormina in the Messina province, don’t miss the capital city of Messina and nearby Mount Etna park.

Caltanissetta province may be one of the island’s least-known areas, but here you’ll find many historic sites of great interest. Discover the town of Caltanissetta: start from its most symbolic monument, the Fontana del Tritone, and then visit the Duomo.

Don’t miss the Arab quarter with its Castello di Pietrarossa which overlooks the entire valley. One of the province’s most ancient monuments, it’s notable for its towers and gorgeous views.

The province of Potenza has many treasures worth discovering. These include Pietrapertosa, the highest town in the Dolomiti Lucane and a unique gem in the Basilicata region. October is the ideal month for exploring this area which becomes overcrowded in summer.

If you stay in Potenza don’t miss out on the local food. Some of the best in Italy, it’s the perfect union of simple and genuine products. Try the meat, homemade pasta and soups which pair beautifully with the season.

10. Turin

Weather permitting, you can visit the capital city of Turin by bike. Take a ride around the city and follow the bike paths to the Royal Residences. There are also many organized tours that guide you around places of great historical and architectural interest such as Castello del Valentino, Villa della Regina, Giardini Reali and the very famous Mole Antoneliana.
