One of the most popular tourist areas in Italy, the Cinque Terre experienced horrendous damage in 2011 when a river of mud flooded homes and shops, washed away cars, cut off roads and blocked railways and motorways. The Vara and Magra rivers overflowed and several towns were cut off by landslides between Levanto, Monterosso and Vernazza, leaving more than a meter of water in homes. Since then, much work has been done, though much remains, and the villages of the Cinque Terre are back to being a top tourist destination.
Not all the paths (in particular Sentiero Azzurro) are open between the villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, so check the status before you arrive to plan your hiking routes. Railway lines have resumed operations and train schedules are back to their frequent stops.
The Cinque Terre is one of the most beautifully preserved areas in Liguria and all along the Tyrrhenian coast. The eighteen kilometers of rocky coastline is home to beaches, bays and deep water dominated by a spectacular mountain chain, all part of a Marine Protected Area and National Park. Vines and olive trees grow on steep terraced hillsides lined with ancient stone walls, offering jaw-dropping views of the crystal clear sea.
The five villages of the Cinque Terre were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997: Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the group; Vernazza, considered by many the most charming; Corniglia, set on a rocky promontory; Manarola, a tiny jewel full of typical Genoese houses; and pretty Riomaggiore.
