Once again, we bring you the Top 10 provinces of the month! With Easter just around the corner and longer spring days, we’ve got a whole new slew of places to visit in Italy in April! Take a look!

1. Avellino

An absolute must if you’re visiting the Avellino province is its wonderful fairytale castles.

Dating back to the Middle Ages, many of the castles were transformed into homes for noble families over the years. Almost every commune in Irpinia so you’re truly spoilt for choice.

We recommend Morra Castle, once the home of cardinals and poets, and Castello di Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi. Today we’d like to suggest Castello di San Barbato, which stands on a hill at 450 meters. A fascinating architectural complex from the Lombard era, the castle is located in Manocalzati. At the fortress you can admire the monumental staircase leading to the entrance and its stunning rounded doorway.

In Lauro you can visit Lancellotti Castle, built in a scenic spot at the start of the XI century and famous for its artistic value. The fortress is still considered one of the best preserved defensive complexes in the Campania region.

2. Caserta

A bit further north in Campania, the second destination on our list is the province of Caserta. What does this region have to offer in April? Since Easter falls on the 12th this year, why not discover some of its local Easter traditions?

In Campania, like in so many other Italian regions, a wealth of ancient and spirited Easter traditions are still alive today. In Sessa Aurunca, for example, a religious ritual takes place from Monday to Wednesday. On Friday there’s a procession which moves in a swinging motion, known as the “cunnulella”, during which huge bonfires and songs accompany the citizens to the city’s cathedral.

Local tradition is also reflected in the region’s cuisine. What do they eat in Caserta for Easter? They begin with light first courses, such as zuppa napoletana, a meat and vegetable broth, followed by second courses of lamb or goat, before finishing it off with a classic pastiera, a cake made of ricotta and buckwheat.

There are so many places to visit near Milan. We can't wait to tell you about them!

For example, just 40 km from the city you’ll find Crespi d'Adda, a hamlet listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The well-preserved “company-town” still bears evidence of architectural history typical of the industrial revolution. Take part in one of the many guided tours led by local residents.

Even closer to Milan, Morimondo Abbey is just 30 minutes from the center. You can get there via a well-maintained cycle path. The Cistercian abbey puts on cultural activities every weekend, such as tasty medieval lunches and workshops for families.

If you’re staying in the city, remember that in addition to visiting the Duomo and fulfilling all your shopping needs, you can also make a reservation to see the Cenacolo (The Last Supper) at Santa Maria delle Grazie. In the evening, photograph the columns of San Lorenzo, and on Saturday and Sunday mornings, wander among the booths at the Fiera di Senigallia, a fabulous vintage market.

Looking for somewhere to recharge at the end of the day? Our farmhouses in the province of Milan will welcome you with open arms.

5. Benevento

Benevento is the fifth destination on our Top 10 list for the month of April.

Perhaps its the silent almost spectral ambience, or some kind of magic in the air, that has earned Benevento the nominer “city of witches”. Whatever the reason, April is the perfect month to visit.

After a lovely walk around the city center and photographs of Arco di Traiano, Santa Sofia Church and Rettori Fortress, head towards the narrow alleyways of the Conservatorio and Hortus Conclusus Paladino, a small museum where you can see some unique works of art (entry is free).

Outside the city of Benevento, you’ll find Pietrelcina, a fascinating town in a stunning landscape, Campolattaro, an ancient hamlet perched on the side of a hill, and Casalduni, with its perfectly preserved medieval ducal castle.

Feeling a bit hungry and tired after all that sightseeing? Relax and rejuvenate at one of our farmhouses in the province of Benevento!

April brings the first warmth of spring, so it’s the perfect moment to visit the province of Naples. Our advice: jump in a car and head straight to Sorrento, a much-loved travel destination since Roman times!

As well as its beaches and crystal-clear sea, Sorrento offers an explosion of colour as springtime brightens up the entire coastline. There are lavish gardens to explore, resplendent monuments, charming streets and squares with a traditional vibe. And what can we say about this region’s local cuisine? There’s a wealth of delicious wholesome products to sample, from mozzarella to tomatoes, and homemade pasta.

Close to Naples, you can visit the ruins of Pompeii. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the careful preservation of its temples and monuments, as well as the decorations inscribed on its theatres, arenas and villas. Looking for a more adventurous option? Why not climb Vesuvius, one of the world’s most famous volcanoes?

Heading back to Lombardy, this time we’re stopping in the province of Cremona

If you're not sure where to go, we suggest starting off with a visit to Crema. Explore its small historic center and mysterious cathedral, and then continue on to Soncino and the Sforza fortress, one of the best preserved fortifications in Lombardy. Listed as one of Italy's most beautiful hamlets, the town of Soncino is rich in art and history. Be sure to pay a visit to the Museum of Printing located in a fourteenth-century tower in the town’s north-east district. A printworks was established here just 30 years after Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press.

Sampling Soncino's typical produce is a must. Radici amare are a tasty vegetable similar to a carrot. They have a strong bitter taste and are touted for their purifying qualities.

While in Cremona, don’t skip Casalmaggiore and its Neo-Gothic town hall, or Pizzighettone, a hamlet on the banks of the River Adda just 20 km from Cremona.

Want to see these areas of Lombardy for yourself? Then take a look at our agritourisms in the province of Cremona to find somewhere to stay.

8. Bologna

We’re back in Emilia Romagna with our eighth province, but this time we’re heading to Bologna. The province offers a truly unforgettable calendar of events.
It starts with the Bologna Children's Book Fair, which brings together a wealth of cultural initiatives relating to children’s books and publishing, accompanied by a rich selection of conferences and meetings regarding various awards and exhibitions. Open from 6 - 9 April in Bologna.

One interesting and unusual event will take place on 8 and 9 April in Pieve di Cento. The International Teabag and Tea Label Exchangeis an unmissable event for lovers of the hot drink.
On 9 April, San Pietro in Casale will become an enormous multicoloured, sweetly fragrance garden to welcome San Pietro in Fiore and its exhibitors of aromatic plants, herbs, flowers and fruit plants.
Near Bologna, inCastel San Pietro Terme to be exact, on 17 April, you can visitVery Slow Italy, an exhibition dedicated entirely to typical local produce and Italian food and wine excellence.

Then Bari and its province is the perfect choice for you! Altamura exudes an elegant ambiance with its historic palazzos and cathedral that blends Romanesque, Baroque and Rococo art. Plus, Altamura is famous for its wonderful bread! There’s also Conversano with its castle (the counts’ residence), Santa Rita sanctuary and the lovely main piazza.

If you’re craving a glimpse of the sea, Mola di Bari is just what you need with its beautiful coastal views from Castello Angioino. Stop for a tasty lunch of local specialties, and then do some more exploring. Don’t forget to plan spend time in Polignanoso you can enjoy its incredible coastline, free-access beaches and the azure sea.

10. Rome

We’ve come to the last destination on our list for April: Rome.

In April, the Eternal City is waking up from its winter slumber, welcoming visitors with open arms. A tour of its churches, enchanting piazzas and the alleys in Trastevere is always a good choice for a weekend.

If you happen to be in Rome over Easter, enjoy the local holiday traditions, especially at the table. On Easter morning, Romans start with a typical breakfast: no cappuccino or brioche today - it’s hardboiled eggs, offal, savoury flans, artichoke frittata and colomba, an Easter cake shaped like a dove. At lunch, try the l’abbacchio, tender young lamb, a very common dish to celebrate Pasqua

The next day, Easter Monday, why not head to the park for a picnic?

If you need a lovely place to stay for the holiday, we’ve got plenty of options right here!
