The sea
Cilento has the highest concentration of blue flags in Italy, recognition given to the quality of water and services. The beach of Ascea, 800 meters from Barnìa is of soft sand, 4km long, mostly free, for those who want the typical services of the beach there are some bathing establishments.
Even in the periods of greatest tourist affluence you can find stretches of beach less frequented.
Barnìa offers its guests umbrellas and sunbeds that you can take to a different beach every day.
The beach of Ascea is preferred by turtles for nesting (it is not uncommon to see the hatching of eggs).
The cliff (5km from Barnìa) is ideal for exploring the depths of the Tyrrhenian Sea with mask.
On the beach you can rent pedal boats, boats, canoes, or be accompanied to the beaches of the coves of the cliff.
A few minutes by car you can visit other places and beaches such as Acciaroli, Santa Maria di Castellabate, Pisciotta, Palinuro, Camerota, Gli infreschi, Scario.
From the port of Casalvelino departs our sailboat Dodi for swimming in dream beaches (try it to believe).
From the port of Palinuro and Camerota leave the fishermen with their typical boats, the "gozzi", to visit the caves of Palinuro and the beaches of infreschi, Cala Bianca and countless other places.
Archaeology.
Barnìa is in the area of the Elea-Velia Archaeological Park, a Greek colony founded by the Focei around 540 BC.
Interesting are the remains of the city of Roman times, the baths, the agora, the forum, the sacred well, the amphitheater. The remains of the first Greek settlements are still present.
In Cilento there are other archaeological sites Molpa a Palinuro and the fortifications of Moio della Civitella.
In 20 minutes by train (the train station is 2.5 km away) you can reach Paestum and its Greek temples (550 BC).
Pompeii can be reached by car or train as well as Oplonti, Ercolano, Pozzuoli, Cuma.
Nature.
Barnìa is surrounded by hundreds of hectares of olive groves and vineyards. Peaceful walks can start directly from the house you have chosen.
The presence of the National Park has made possible the protection of the territory, the presence of numerous wild animals (badger, fox, wild boar, hawk, hoopoe, turtle dove, woodpecker).
The trails equipped by the National Park offer very beautiful natural landscapes: the path of lovers starts 100 meters from the shore and takes you into a forest of oaks before you appreciate the beauty of the cliffs from the top of the ridge of the hill.
The path of the Gods can be intercepted directly from Barnìa, crosses the military area of the city of Elea and allows you to admire the Gulf of Velia and understand the reasons for the founding of the city by the Greek settlers who chose the area where it was easy to protect the ships in two natural coves, now buried.
It is still possible to follow the stone roads used in the past decades for the transport of agricultural products by mules.
The naturalistic oasis of Alento, 20km away, offers the possibility to observe the birds in their humid habitat.
Many other naturalistic destinations in the National Park, on Monte Stella, Pollica, the forests of Monte Gelbison, the valley of orchids, and . . . much more.
The villages.
The small villages offer the typical Mediterranean environment. Close to the coast, the villages are built in an interweaving of narrow streets, alleys, squares, arches, typical of the medieval period.
Ascea, Pisciotta, Rodio, San Severino, Lentiscosa, Licusati, Pollica, San Mauro Cilento, Acquavella, Castelnuovo, Salento, Gioi, Stio, Pellare, just some of the small medieval villages where time passes slowly.
The seaside villages of Scario, Camerota, Pisciotta, Pioppi, Acciaroli, Agnone, Santa Maria di Castellabate can make you feel the flavours and atmosphere of our sea, of the fishermen, of the sleepy joy of our people.
Food and Wine
Much has been written about the longevity of the people of Cilento linked to simple and genuine food. In reality, the "Mediterranean diet", observed by scientists all over the world, is simply the poor way to eat what the Cilento offered our ancestors and which is still available today.
Flours from ancient wheat, the use of natural yeasts (the mother levitus), the simple seasoning of the pasta, bread preserved for a long time, the many wild vegetables (chicory, cardoons, savoy cabbages, beans, courgettes, cabbages, broad beans), the way to prepare simple soups of vegetables and legumes, the abundant blue fish in our sea, the extra virgin olive oil, the simple and light cheeses. It has always been our way of feeding ourselves, then we discovered that it is good for our health!
Numerous trattorias serve our typical dishes. Scarole and beans with "fresella" (bread left to dry in the oven); stuffed aubergines, stuffed anchovies, anchovies in crumbs, fusilli with goat ragout, pasta with fresh broccoli, lagani and chickpeas, ciambotta (seasonal vegetables cooked slowly). . . . the flavors of yesteryear.
