In the Catania Province, between Etna and the plane of Simeto River, the Turismo Rurale Fontana del Cherubino is settled in a land where traditional olive and orange agriculture has traditionally carried out. Fontana del Cherubino started in 2004, with the aim of promoting and spreading the quality of the most important product: the high-quality extra-virgin olive oil of the Etna territory. The end of 2008 has seen the birth of the restaurant, open every weekend and on holiday days.
The restaurant has 3 rooms of different dimensions, for up to 80 person. The bigger room is also equipped with an audio system and video projector and it can host meetings, conferences and workshop. A beautiful and wide terrace with a view on the Simeto river valley is the ideal place to join a sunny lunch or romantic dinner, in a peaceful atmosphere of the Etna countryside.
The farm produces also extra-virgin olive oil, got from old olive trees of Nocellara Etna cultivar (some more than 100 years old). Olives are precociously and strictly manually at the 2nd half of October to get a less yield and consequent high quality oil. They are crushed with a cold continuous cycle in the very same day of the harvest. Oil rests for about 2 months, naturally decanting into stainless steel tanks of 1000 litres in absence of air and without any mechanical filtration. It has than bottled, avoiding air contact. In 2007 about 2500 bottles were produced.
The Turismo Rurale Fontana del Cherubino is placed in an ideal position to visit Etna from the southern side of Rifugio Sapienza, which is about 20 km far. From here it is possible to take the Etna cableway to see the main central crater of the volcano. Moving down to the valley, it can be seen the Simeto river, the most important among Sicilian rivers. Beautiful features like the lavic canyons (Site of Community Importance) or the Saracens Stone Bridge can be seen during a beautiful exploring of the river upstream to the river spring in the green Nebrodi Mounts.
From the Fontana del Cherubino many towns many of Etna southern slopes can also be visited: Paternò, Adrano, S. Maria di Licodia, with the homonymous fountain built in the ’700. Catania and its baroque historical buildings are just 25 km far, while the Cyclope Seaside can be reach in 30 kms.
Etna is an incomparable territory for enogastronomic tourism: S. Maria di Licodia is one of the most important center for extra-virgin olive oil production of DOP ETNA, as it can be seen by the century-old olives landscape. Wine places are instead narrated by the Etna Wine Road, that from Riposto port goes up to Randazzo.
Many other gastronomic excellences are present in the zone: oranges, indian fig trees, almonds and pistachios are all typical products of the Etna area.
