The agriturismo
The farmastay “Il Querceto” is an old Tuscan farm situated in the south corner of the district of Pisa, in the middle of the quiet country of the Upper Cecina valley. Built on a headland of the Metalliferous Hills, the farmstay rises above the River Cecina valley and the wildlife reserve of Berignone-Tatti, 3 Km away from Pomarance, one of the oldest medieval hamlets of the whole area.
The accommodation
In the farmstay “Il Querceto” you will enjoy a pleasant sejourn in rooms or apartments; in the first floor, in the wide and confortable rooms, you will find a double-bed, a wooden wardrobe, a chest of drawers, a writing-table, an arm-chair, a frezing cocktail cabinet, a TV set (just on demand) and a thermostat for the heating regulation. Every room is provided with its own bathroom with shower.
On the ground floor stands a room equipped for disabled persons (double-bed and bathroom) with its own indipendent entrance.
The apartments “La Rocca” and “La Miniera” have their own indipendent entrance and both are provided with kitchen-sitting room (wiuth sofa-bed) and double-bed room with bathroom.
Moreover, in the apartement “La Rocca” you may also fond a single-bed room where it is possible to have an extra bed (on demand only!).
Activities and surrounding
There are numerous stimulating and suggestive itineraries one can enjoy in the Upper Cecina Valley, with its beautiful landscapes and rich natural environments. This is an area of rolling hills and protected woodlands, such as the forests of Berignone and Monterufoli which are maintained by the Association of Mountain Communities, and also an area rich in history, art and archaeology – a hidden corner of Tuscany waiting to be discovered.
The historic centre of Pomarance still conserves its ancient configuration with its castle walls, the monumental gates into the city, medieval and renaissance palaces and the Romanesque church of Saint John the Baptist. Numerous medieval hamlets and ancient ruins can be found along the slopes of this area, such as the country Church of Saint John in San Dalmazio – a rare example of Romanesque-Norman architecture – and the Rocca Sillana - one of the most important Medici fortresses during the Renaissance, and archaeological finds also suggest that the fortress was used in Etruscan and Roman times.
Of particular interest is the manufacturing of alabaster, with beautiful objects created with artistic workmanship from this local stone, and the use of endogenous vapour to produce energy, with the ancient and modern-day techniques of harnessing geothermal energy illustrated in the captivating Geothermal Museum in Larderello. In just 15 minutes you can reach the town of Volterra, the cultural nucleus of the entire valley that bears witness to over 3,000 years of history. Volterra was inhabited by various civilisations and was an important city under the Etruscans – the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum in Volterra is one of the oldest public museums in Europe and houses one of the world’s finest Etruscan collections. Pomarance’s central location also offers more classic itineraries: with a short drive you can visit the famous Towers of San Gimignano (30 minutes), the Piazza del Campo in Siena (one hour), the Leaning Tower of Pisa (one hour and 15 minutes), Florence (about an hour and half) and the beaches of the Tyrrhenian Coast (30 minutes).
