In the heart of the Siena countryside, a place famous for its Brunello di Montalcino wine, there’s the “Comunali” estate, where the agriturismo is located. The place is entirely surrounded by Brunello wine vineyards, olive groves, and forests. It’s about 3 km from the historic center of Montalcino. The estate was restored to its former splendor after careful renovation work that transformed the farmhouses into pleasant three-room apartments; the master villa maintains its original spacious rooms; the former stables have become gracious two-room apartments. In this hamlet there’s also a small church dedicated to Saint Francis, which represents the symbol of this place nestled in pristine nature. The agriturismo offers 10 apartments of various sizes and characteristics, able to host between 2 and 10 people. The apartments are named after old peasants who once worked and lived here. The rooms are bright, panoramic, and almost all have a spacious living room and kitchen in line with Tuscan traditions. The farmhouse also provides two apartments for the physically challenged. During summer months guests may use the two swimming pools, a large one for adults and a small one for children, which both offer a spectacular view of the Val d’Orcia.
Reservations can be made to visit the farmhouse wine cellar and purchase Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino wines produced on site.

Montalcino is located on an enchanting hill 564 m above sea level, and still maintains its charming medieval center. Its territory, which is part of the Parco Artistico Naturale e Culturale della Val d'Orcia, is covered in vineyards (which produce greatly praised wines like Brunello), olive groves, and forests with holm oaks (in fact, the name Montalcino, or Mons Ilcinus, probably derives from the Latin word for the holm oak, or Ilex) .
Visit at Montalcino:
the 14th-century Fortress,
the Municipal Palace (late 13th-cent. public architecture),
the Loggiati di Piazza del Popolo (with arches from the 14th and 15th cent.),
the neoclassical Cathedral (built upon an ancient church from the 11th cent.),
the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso (built in the 17th cent. on top of a 15th-cent. church),
the Church of Sant'Egidio (Siena’s church, 14th cent.), and the 14th-cent churches of Sant'Agostino (Siena school frescoes from the 14th cent.) and San Francesco, with convents and lovely cloisters.
Set dates for Montalcino are the Sagra del Tordo, which takes place on the last Sunday in October, and the Opening of the Hunting Season, the second Sunday in August. These are important historical feasts with archery competitions between the four sections of the city (Borghetto, Pianello, Ruga, and Travaglio) that call to mind boar hunting in the Middle Ages, while a long parade in lavish costumes unfolds through the city streets, accompanied by folkloric music and dancing by the group “Il Trescone.”
9 km from Montalcino, at Castelnuovo dell’Abate, you’ll find the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, a wonderful work of architecture that, according to legend, was built on top of an ancient votive chapel commissioned by Charlemagne in 781 AD.
