San Gimignano is one of the most picturesque and charming towns in Tuscany and the province of Siena. It appears, all enclosed in its double circle of walls and studded with tall towers, in the sea of olive trees that cover a hill overlooking the Elsa Valley. San Gimignano (Siena), of very ancient origin, was named after a bishop of Modena who lived in the 4th century AD. The town retains its two- and fourteenth-century architectural features almost intact.
Originally there were 72 towers, twenty-five at the end of the 1500s. Today 13 remain intact, 7 of which surround the main square, Cistern Square.
The tallest is the tower of the Podesta's palace, known as "la rognosa." The city's most interesting monuments are the cathedral of the Duomo, the town hall, also called the people's palace, and the church of St. Augustine. In the cathedral built in 1100 there are frescoes by Taddeo di Bartolo, Benozzo Gozzoli, Barna da Siena, and Bartolo di Fredi. Also inside the cathedral is the chapel of Santa Fina, a Renaissance jewel created by architect Giuliano da Maiano. The chapel's altar is by Benedetto da Maiano and is surmounted by Ghirlandaio's enchanting frescoes depicting the life of Santa Fina, the maiden of San Gimignano who lived in the 1200s.
The Palazzo del popolo of San Gimignano houses a civic picture gallery with works by Guido da Siena, Pinturicchio, Filippo Lippi, Benozzo Gozzoli and other Sienese and Florentine artists. Inside the palace Dante Alighieri gave a speech on May 8, 1300 to invite the city to join the Guelph League of Tuscany. In the "hall of Dante" is a large "majesty" by Lippo Memmi. In the Romanesque-Gothic church of St. Augustine there is an altar by Benedetto da Maiano and a choir with frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli dedicated to the life of St. Augustine.
The farm is located in the center of Tuscany, 15 kilometers from Volterra, 35 from Siena, 55 from Florence, 60 from Pisa, 70 from Arezzo and 80 from Lucca.
